Maintenance Tips
How often should I clean my dryer vent?+
At least once a year. If you notice your dryer taking longer than usual to dry clothes, feeling hot to the touch, or you see lint building up around the exhaust, it is overdue. A clogged dryer vent is one of the leading causes of house fires. It is a quick job that can save you real trouble down the road.
How do I keep my refrigerator running efficiently?+
Pull the fridge out once or twice a year and vacuum the condenser coils on the back or underneath. Dusty coils make the compressor work harder, which drives up your electric bill and shortens the life of the fridge. Also make sure the door seals are clean and closing tight. If a dollar bill slides out easily when the door is shut, the gasket probably needs attention.
When should I replace vs. repair my appliance?+
A good rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half of what a new unit would cost, and the appliance is already past the halfway point of its expected lifespan, replacement usually makes more sense. I will always give you an honest opinion on whether a repair is worth it. I would rather tell you to save your money than sell you a repair you do not need.
Why does my washer smell bad?+
Front-load washers are the biggest offenders. Moisture gets trapped in the door gasket and detergent drawer, and mold starts growing. After every load, leave the door cracked open and wipe down the rubber gasket. Once a month, run an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar or a washer cleaning tablet. If the smell is already bad, the gasket may need a deep clean or replacement.
How do I clean my dishwasher?+
Pull out the bottom rack and clean the filter at the base of the tub. Most people do not even know it is there. Food debris builds up and causes odor and poor cleaning performance. Do this once a month. You can also run an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar on the top rack to clear out mineral buildup and grease. Check the spray arms for clogged holes while you are at it.
What maintenance can I do to avoid a service call?+
Clean your dryer vent yearly. Vacuum your refrigerator coils twice a year. Clean your dishwasher filter monthly. Do not overload your washer. Make sure your oven door seals properly. Check that your garbage disposal runs freely and is not jammed with food. These small habits prevent most of the repair calls I see. When something does go wrong, catching it early is always cheaper than waiting.
